FG Explains Why Some Nigerians Have Not Received ₦50,000 Relief SMS

The Federal Government has explained why some Nigerians who are waiting for the new ₦50,000 relief support have not yet received an SMS, assuring citizens that a delayed message does not automatically mean they have been excluded from the programme.

The clarification comes as expectations continue to grow around the Federal Government's National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), a programme designed to provide financial support to poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria.

According to the government, the ₦50,000 payments are being made in phases, meaning beneficiaries are not necessarily contacted at the same time.

Why Some Nigerians Have Not Received the SMS

The Federal Government said payment providers are contacting selected beneficiaries in batches.

This means that while one person may receive an SMS notifying them about the ₦50,000 support, another person may have to wait before receiving a notification.

The government's official NERSI website states that payments are being released in phases and that providers contact beneficiaries in batches.

Therefore, Nigerians who have not received a message should not immediately assume that they have been rejected.

However, the government also made an important clarification: not everybody will be selected during the current phase.

The programme is designed to support a limited number of vulnerable households at a time, so a person who does not receive an SMS may either still be waiting for their batch or may not have been selected for the current phase.

How Nigerians Are Selected

Unlike some government programmes where citizens are asked to fill out a fresh application form, the N50,000 NERSI support is not an open application programme.

The government says beneficiaries are selected from the National Social Register and verified national identity records.

This means individuals cannot simply register themselves or pay an agent to put their names on the list.

The selection process is intended to identify poor and vulnerable households that qualify for the intervention.

The government also says the programme covers Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, with selection based on need rather than religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.

How to Check If You Have Been Selected

Nigerians who want to check their status can use the approved payment provider connected to the programme.

The government has listed five providers:

- ALAT

- MoMo PSB

- NairaGram

- OPay

- Moniepoint

The official NERSI website provides USSD options for checking eligibility and accessing the support.

For example, the government lists *955*20# for OPay and *5573*27# for Moniepoint. ALAT, MoMo PSB and NairaGram also have their own official USSD channels.

Citizens should use only the official channels and should be careful when receiving messages claiming to be from the Federal Government.

What Happens After You Receive the SMS?

According to the official programme information, selected beneficiaries will receive an SMS from one of the approved payment providers.

The message contains instructions for accepting the support.

The beneficiary is required to give consent before the money is credited.

The government says the process can be completed using a basic mobile phone and does not necessarily require internet access.

Once the beneficiary accepts the offer through the approved USSD instructions, the mobile wallet is opened or linked and the ₦50,000 is credited.

The official NERSI website says the full ₦50,000 goes into the beneficiary's wallet, with nothing deducted from the grant itself.

Is the ₦50,000 a Loan?

No.

The Federal Government says the ₦50,000 support is a grant, not a loan.

This means selected beneficiaries are not expected to repay the money.

The programme was introduced as part of the government's effort to provide immediate financial relief to vulnerable households facing high living costs.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction officially announced the commencement of NERSI on October 30, 2026, describing it as a presidential initiative aimed at providing immediate financial assistance to vulnerable Nigerians.

Government Warns Nigerians About Scammers

As interest in the ₦50,000 support grows, the government has also issued warnings about fraudsters.

Officials say Nigerians should not pay anyone who claims they can add them to the beneficiary list or speed up their payment.

The official programme information states that nobody can sell a place on the list.

Therefore, anyone asking for money in exchange for registration, approval or faster payment should be treated as a potential fraudster.

Beneficiaries are also warned not to disclose sensitive banking information.

The government specifically warns Nigerians never to give their PIN, OTP or BVN to someone claiming to be helping them receive the grant.

What If You Receive a “Not Selected” Message?

Nigerians who check their status and receive a message saying they are currently not selected should not assume that they will never qualify for any future support.

The current programme is being implemented in phases.

The government says the current intervention covers a limited number of households at a time, meaning selection can vary between phases.

However, Nigerians should also avoid anyone promising to change their status in exchange for money.

No private agent can officially add someone to the NERSI beneficiary list.

Important Advice for Nigerians

If you are waiting for the ₦50,000 relief SMS, be patient and use only official channels to check your status.

Do not pay an agent because someone claims your payment is waiting.

Do not click suspicious links sent through WhatsApp, Facebook or SMS.

Do not give anyone your OTP, PIN or BVN.

The official NERSI website says genuine programme messages come from the approved providers and do not require beneficiaries to pay money to receive the support.

For Nigerians who have already received an official notification, the next step is to follow the instructions contained in the message and confirm the payment through the appropriate provider.

For those still waiting, the Federal Government's latest explanation is clear: the rollout is happening in batches, so not receiving an SMS yet does not necessarily mean you have been left out.

However, because the programme is limited to selected vulnerable households in each phase, not every Nigerian will receive the ₦50,000 support.

Important: The programme is free. If anyone asks you to pay money before you can receive the grant, do not pay them.

For official programme information, Nigerians can use the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction's NERSI information page.
