Nicki Minaj Reposts Peter Obi’s Message on Borgu Killings, Kidnappings in Niger State
American rapper Nicki Minaj has drawn fresh attention to Nigeria’s security situation after reposting a message by Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi concerning reported killings, kidnappings and ransom demands in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The repost, made on Thursday, September 17, came after Obi raised renewed concerns over the fate of people who were reportedly abducted during attacks in communities across Borgu.
Obi's latest statement followed reports that some of those abducted had allegedly been killed, while several others remained unaccounted for.
Obi raises fresh concerns over Borgu attacks
In his latest statement, Obi recalled that he had previously raised the alarm on August 27 following reports of a mass abduction in Borgu.
At the time, reports indicated that as many as 600 people, predominantly women, children and elderly residents, could have been abducted following attacks on communities including Dekara and the reported abduction of worshippers during Juma’at prayers.
Obi acknowledged that the exact number of people abducted was still being verified. He also referred to reports that about 30 people may have been killed during the attacks.
In his latest intervention, Obi said the situation had become even more disturbing following reports that some of the abducted victims had been killed, while others remained missing.
He also referred to a separate report involving a bandit group that allegedly killed a Nigerian and sent the victim's severed head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.
According to Obi, if the reported killing was connected to an attempt to pressure the community into paying money for people still being held captive, it would demonstrate the increasingly dangerous consequences of criminal groups using abducted Nigerians as leverage.
Calls for stronger security measures
Obi called for the government to intensify efforts to protect residents and rescue people who remain in captivity.
Among the measures he advocated were intelligence-led security operations, stronger coordination between security agencies, improved equipment for security personnel, effective border protection and sustained operations against criminal networks.
He also argued that Nigerians should not become accustomed to mass abductions, ransom demands, criminal levies and displacement.
His comments came amid continued concern about the security situation in parts of Niger State and other areas affected by kidnapping and armed attacks.
Government says rescue efforts are ongoing
The Niger State Government previously said it was working with security agencies to secure the release of people abducted in Dakara, Borgu Local Government Area.
The state government said it was providing support and logistics to security agencies involved in the rescue efforts and stressed that tackling banditry and other security threats requires cooperation between government, security agencies and affected communities.
There have also been recent security operations in Borgu.
On September 15, the Niger State Police Command said its personnel rescued two kidnapped victims in the Wawa forest area of Borgu after a gun battle with suspected kidnappers. The police said three suspected kidnappers were killed during the operation, while other suspects escaped with gunshot injuries.
Reports of bodies recovered
The situation became even more disturbing with reports that bodies of some abducted villagers had been recovered.
The Sun reported on September 17 that residents of communities including Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida and Gidan-Zana had recovered 25 bodies allegedly belonging to villagers who had been abducted during an August attack.
The report said the bodies were recovered after the captors allegedly directed affected communities to go into the bush and identify them. The report also said the captors had threatened remaining hostages over ransom demands.
The reports have added to concerns about the fate of other people still believed to be in captivity.
Nicki Minaj’s repost sparks reactions
Against this background, Nicki Minaj's decision to repost Obi's message brought the issue to the attention of a much wider social-media audience.
The development generated mixed reactions online.
Some Nigerians welcomed the international attention, arguing that the repost could help more people outside Nigeria become aware of the security challenges facing communities in the country.
Others questioned Minaj's decision to share a message from a Nigerian political figure, turning the discussion toward the intersection of international celebrity influence, Nigerian politics and the country's security situation.
The repost does not, by itself, establish Minaj's position on Nigerian politics beyond the fact that she shared Obi's message. Her repost has nevertheless increased the visibility of the statement among her large international audience.
A continuing security concern
The Borgu situation has become one of the recent examples of the difficulties facing communities in parts of Niger State, where armed groups have carried out attacks and kidnappings.
An Associated Press report on the August attacks said armed groups attacked several villages in Niger State and that scores of people were abducted from a mosque during Friday prayers. Local sources cited by AP gave lower figures than the early reports of 600, illustrating the uncertainty surrounding the total number of people abducted.
Reuters separately reported that President Bola Tinubu ordered a rescue operation after a mass kidnapping in Niger State involving approximately 600 people, while authorities continued working to establish the precise number of missing persons.
The differing figures reported by various sources make it important to distinguish between initial estimates and confirmed numbers as authorities continue efforts to establish what happened to those who remain missing.
For families in the affected communities, however, the central concern remains the safe return of relatives who were taken during the attacks.
With Obi's message now receiving international attention following Minaj's repost, the security situation in Borgu has once again become a major topic of discussion both in Nigeria and online.
