Egyptian TV Presenter Breaks Down in Court After Being Sentenced to Death by Hanging

An Egyptian television presenter broke down in tears inside a courtroom after she was sentenced to death by hanging over her alleged involvement in an organised criminal gang accused of manufacturing and trafficking synthetic drugs.

The presenter, identified as Khalifa, 39, was among 12 defendants sentenced to death by a criminal court in Cairo.

According to reports, Khalifa was convicted in connection with an organised criminal group accused of producing and trafficking synthetic drugs.

The court handed down different sentences to the defendants involved in the case. Nine other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, while seven people were acquitted.

A total of 28 people were reportedly involved in the case.

The emotional moment reportedly came after the court announced the death sentences, with Khalifa breaking down in tears in the courtroom.

The case has attracted attention because of the severity of the sentences and the involvement of a television personality among the defendants.

The latest development adds to a growing number of high-profile drug-related criminal cases in which Egyptian authorities have pursued severe penalties against those convicted of organised trafficking and production.

Naija Gist Central will continue to monitor the case and bring readers updates as more information becomes available.
