US-Based Nigerian Basketball Player Daniel Tobilola Adegboyega Faces Deportation Amid Rape Charge and Alleged Visa Violation

United States-based Nigerian university basketball player Daniel Tobilola Adegboyega is reportedly facing possible deportation as legal and immigration proceedings against him continue following his arrest on a first-degree rape charge.

According to reports by Sports247, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged an immigration detainer against the 21-year-old athlete, a move that could result in his transfer to federal immigration custody if he is released from criminal detention.

Authorities also allege that Adegboyega remained in the United States after his F-1 student visa expired in 2023 and that he has not maintained active student status since 2025. These allegations have placed him under scrutiny for potential violations of U.S. immigration laws, separate from the ongoing criminal case.

However, individuals close to the player have strongly disputed the immigration claims. Members of his host family reportedly insist that any issues surrounding his visa stemmed from administrative complications during his transfer between universities rather than an intentional breach of immigration regulations.

Adegboyega was arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault and has been charged with first-degree rape. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge, with his legal representatives maintaining that the encounter was consensual. Prosecutors, however, contend that evidence gathered during the investigation supports the allegations against him.

The Nigerian athlete remains in custody without bond while the criminal proceedings continue.

The case has also had significant consequences for his basketball career. Jacksonville State University, where Adegboyega played collegiate basketball, has suspended him indefinitely from all team activities pending the outcome of the legal process.

If U.S. immigration authorities conclude that he violated the conditions of his student visa, he could face deportation proceedings in addition to the criminal charges currently before the court.

The case continues to attract attention both in Nigeria and the United States due to Adegboyega's status as a promising collegiate athlete. Court proceedings are ongoing, and no final determination has been made regarding either the criminal allegations or his immigration status.

As with all criminal cases, Adegboyega is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
