Sheikh Nuru Khalid Warns Nigerians Against Supporting Tinubu Based on Religion

Sheikh Muhammad Nuru Khalid, founder of the Islamic Research and Da’awah Foundation, has cautioned Nigerians against supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election solely because of his Muslim faith.

Khalid made the remarks during an interview with Trust TV on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, where he urged voters to assess political candidates based on their performance, policies and ability to address the country’s challenges rather than their religious identity.

According to the cleric, relying on religion as the primary reason for supporting Tinubu could undermine the argument for his re-election by suggesting that his supporters have stronger reasons to defend his administration’s record.

“If you are telling people to vote for BAT because you are a Muslim, you are condemning him,” Khalid said.

He stressed that Nigerians should be free to evaluate political leaders beyond religious considerations as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

Khalid has previously been known for his outspoken comments on political and governance issues. He was formerly the Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Juma’at Mosque in Abuja before his removal in 2022 following criticism of the government over insecurity.

His latest comments are likely to generate further debate as political parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
