Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Criticise Meta Over £13bn Child Harm Settlement

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have criticised Meta’s decision to settle a major child harm lawsuit for up to £13 billion, arguing that the agreement allows the technology giant to avoid a court verdict that could have resulted in more significant institutional changes.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who recently returned to the United Kingdom after spending six years in the United States, expressed their concerns in a public statement addressing the settlement involving Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Harry and Meghan accused Meta of operating a “data-extraction business model” and questioned the absence of an apology as part of the settlement agreement.

The couple also argued that Meta has sufficient financial resources to absorb the settlement, pointing to estimates that the company could recover an equivalent amount through profits within a relatively short period.

According to the couple, the agreement could allow Meta to resolve the legal challenge without making the deeper changes that a court judgment might have required.

The lawsuit centred on allegations concerning the impact of social media platforms on children and young people, including claims relating to addictive features and potential harm to their mental and physical wellbeing.

Meta has disputed the allegations and has not admitted wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

The agreement has nevertheless sparked renewed debate over whether financial settlements are sufficient to hold major technology companies accountable for the potential consequences of their platforms, particularly when children are involved.

Harry and Meghan have previously campaigned on issues surrounding online safety and the impact of social media on young people. Their latest comments are likely to add further attention to the growing international debate over how technology companies should be regulated and held accountable for child safety.
