Kenneth Okonkwo Recalls Conversation With Northern Muslims Over Religion in Nigerian Politics
Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the Atiku-Amaechi presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, has recalled a conversation he had with northern Muslims over the role of religion in Nigerian politics.
Okonkwo said the discussion reinforced his view that religious identity should not be used as a basis for determining whether a candidate can receive support from voters across Nigeria.
The lawyer and politician had previously spoken publicly about the perception that northern Muslim voters would not support a Christian presidential candidate.
During an interview in 2022, Okonkwo said a Muslim friend from Kano had encouraged him to support Peter Obi, arguing against the notion that northern Muslims would automatically reject a Christian candidate.
Okonkwo's latest position comes as political parties and emerging alliances intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
He was appointed spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar in July 2026 after the former vice president emerged as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate. Atiku is running with former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate.
The appointment has placed Okonkwo at the centre of the campaign's public communication as the Atiku-Amaechi ticket seeks to build support across Nigeria's diverse religious and regional communities.
His comments are likely to renew discussions about the influence of religion, regional identity and political alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
