Hull City Shock Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League Opener

Newly promoted Hull City produced a stunning upset on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2-0 in their opening match of the 2026/27 Premier League season at the MKM Stadium.

Manchester United, under manager Michael Carrick, struggled to cope with Hull's intensity and set-piece threat as the hosts secured a memorable victory on their return to the top flight after a nine-year absence.

Hull took the lead in the 17th minute when Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi reacted quickest after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had saved an effort from Oli McBurnie following a corner.

The Tigers doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Nobel Mendy rose to head home from a Regan Slater free-kick, leaving United with a mountain to climb before half-time.

United improved after the break and enjoyed more possession, with Carrick making changes in an attempt to get his side back into the game. However, Hull remained disciplined defensively and goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis made important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Manchester United introduced Marcus Rashford as they searched for a way back into the match, while new signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos also featured. Despite their efforts, United could not find a response.

The defeat represents a disappointing start to the campaign for Manchester United, particularly after the optimism surrounding their summer rebuild.

For Hull City, however, the victory was historic. It marked their first league win over Manchester United since 1974 and gave them a dream start to their return to the Premier League.
