Award-Winning Ugandan Filmmaker Hassan Mageye Transforms California City Into Film Set for New Project

Part of downtown Santa Rosa, California, was temporarily transformed into a movie set on July 23, 2026, as award-winning Ugandan filmmaker Hassan Mageye filmed scenes for his latest feature, The Silence We Flee.

The production brought a touch of international filmmaking to the California city, with portions of downtown Santa Rosa serving as the backdrop for scenes in the upcoming movie.

Mageye, an award-winning filmmaker from Uganda, is directing the feature as part of his latest cinematic project. The filming marks another step in his growing filmmaking career and highlights the increasing international reach of African filmmakers and their stories.

Residents and visitors in the area had the opportunity to witness the production as the film crew worked on location.

The Silence We Flee is expected to add to Mageye’s body of work as he continues to tell stories through film and connect African filmmaking with audiences beyond the continent.
