Asake Explains Why He Chooses to Sing in Yorùbá Despite Global Success
Nigerian Afrobeats superstar has opened up about why he continues to make most of his music in Yorùbá, even as his songs reach audiences around the world.
Speaking with Essence in 2025, the award-winning singer explained that while he is capable of communicating and performing in English, Yorùbá remains the language that best expresses his emotions, personal experiences, and identity.
«“I can talk to the whole world in English or probably sing to the whole world in English for everyone to understand it. But, my music is based on my story and my journey and the stuff that shapes me… I think I’m more comfortable to say it in Yorùbá because it has the depth of how I want it to be said.”»
According to Asake, music is more than entertainment—it's a reflection of his life, culture, and personal journey. He believes Yorùbá allows him to communicate his emotions with greater authenticity and depth than English.
His comments highlight the growing global acceptance of African languages in mainstream music. Despite primarily singing in Yorùbá, Asake has built an international fan base, proving that powerful storytelling and authentic artistry can transcend language barriers.
The singer's success continues to inspire many young African artists to embrace their native languages while reaching audiences across the globe.
